COTTONWOOD, AZ — A woman has been arrested after she was caught wrapping packing tape around her son’s head and mouth in an act of frustration.
A man asked a deputy to check out a Suburban parked at a Circle K as he had seen a woman “duct taping” the mouth and hands of a small child.
The deputy walked over to the vehicle and calmly stood behind 42-year-old Samantha Lyons who was outside the rear passenger door of the vehicle wrapping a crying 7-year-old’s head with clear packing tape.
The child’s mouth was completely taped shut and another female in the front seat of the vehicle was reportedly yelling at Lyons to stop what she was doing.
When Lyons finished and shut the door, she turned around and saw the officer standing there and immediately began crying. She told the deputy that she was trying to quiet her kid and that she had just gotten frustrated.
With the help of another child in the vehicle, the tape was removed from the boy and he was checked for injuries. None were found, but the deputy explained to Lyons that most kids need to breathe in order to live, and that wrapping their faces with tape can hinder both of those processes.
Lyons was arrested and charged with child abuse and one count of intentional child abuse.
